Fish Women, Ostend probably dates from September 1887, when Whistler is known to have visited Belgium (Walter Dowdeswell commented on 15 September, 'he's away at Ostende'). 1 The butterfly signature on the plate is consistent with a date about 1887.
1: W. Dowdeswell to W. A. Ingram, 15 September 1887, GUW #11320.
The etching could stylistically have dated from 1886, but it does not appear in Wedmore's catalogue of 1886, 2 which suggests (although his listing is not entirely comprehensive) that it is of a later date.
2: Wedmore 1886 A.
