Traghetto dates from 1880. Otto Henry Bacher (1856-1909) remembered seeing 'the first proof of "The Traghetto," the most remarkable proof of all', early in 1880, 'During my first visit to Whistler, when he was living near the Frari'. 1 Whistler then made a second version of the subject, The Traghetto [233].
1: Bacher 1908, p. 165.
Whistler arrived in Venice in September 1879. He was active in Venice from October 1879 to October 1880 and was back in London in November 1880.
