Penny Passengers, Limehouse dates from about 1860. It is dated by the technique, and from details of the bonnets and hats, which suggest an early 1860s date. It is known that Whistler was working in Limehouse, Wapping and Rotherhithe in 1860.
Other etchings of that date cover a variety of subjects, including Annie Haden [67], Axenfeld [68], Rotherhithe [70], and Ross Winans [72].
