Nocturne: Dance House

1889
Etching on laid paper (countermark, 'HK')
K.408 (before the first state recorded by Kennedy)
The Whistler Estate, bequeathed by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1958
GLAHA 46996

Whistler kept four proofs of this, one of his finest etchings. It shows the same building as Square House, Amsterdam and The Canal, Amsterdam. In his catalogue of Whistler's etchings E.G. Kennedy confused the sequence and omitted both these states. This is the earliest known proof, when the image was pure etching.
