Square House, Amsterdam

1889
Etching and drypoint on laid paper
K.404 (before the first state recorded by Kennedy)
The Whistler Estate, presented by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1935
Hunterian Art Gallery, GLAHA 46641

This is a view of the Oudeszijdskolk, Amsterdam, with the back of buildings on Sint Olofsteeg, in what was then the red-light district. With short lines, wriggly and zig-zag marks Whistler suggested the textures of bricks, planks and embroidered curtains. This is an early state, before the six recorded by E.G. Kennedy.
