Ratcliffe Highway, north of Wapping and the Thames, was a squalid slum full of dance halls, gin-houses, sailors and prostitutes. There are only four impressions of this drypoint with its rich, expressive lines.
On the verso of this one are several important collectors' marks: J.H. Hutchinson of London, B.B. MacGeorge of Glasgow, Howard Mansfield, New York lawyer (who wrote a catalogue of Whistler's etchings), and H.G. Whittemore of Naugatuck, Connecticut.
