The Title to the 'French Set'
1858Etching and drypoint on chine collé.
K.25 (1/1).
Bequeathed by Joseph Whistler Revillon, 1955.
Hunterian Art Gallery, GLAHA 46713.
The etching was printed in black ink on various papers, which produced quite different effects. Whistler often used blue or buff wove paper for the cover of the 'French Set', and thin ivory or cream tissue laid down on wove paper (often called chine collé) for the edition. Acid marks that occurred accidentally during the process of biting the plate were left to add texture to the artist's clothes.
