The Title to the 'French Set'

1858
Etching and drypoint on wove paper
K.25 (1/1).
The Whistler Estate, bequeathed by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1958
Hunterian Art Gallery, GLAHA 46712

This is one of two etchings based on a pencil sketch of Whistler's companion, Ernest Delannoy, surrounded by admiring children during an etching tour of the Rhineland. Probably etched on his return to Paris in November, with the artist altered to look more like Whistler, the print was used for the title page for his first published set of etchings, the so-called 'French Set'.
