TECHNIQUE
Butcher's Shop, Sandwich, Kent, is mainly etching, with vigorous broken outlines for the building and hooked, crooked, shorter lines, dots and dashes for the figures. Above the window is a broad area with bands of shading. Within the window is a more elaborately - but untidily - cross-hatched area, possibly augmented with drypoint.
PRINTING
It is very rare. The '1st. proof' was printed in black ink on ivory laid paper (
). It was trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler printed it. One impression was in dark brown ink on off-white - almost grey - laid paper (
) and another in black ink on cream laid paper removed from an old book (
). These two were also trimmed to the platemark but the tab must have been cut off by accident so Whistler's signature and 'imp.' is written on the verso.
