Hermann Heinrich Meier, 1845-1905

Nationality: German
Date of Birth: 1845
Place of Birth: Bremen
Place of Death: Bremen

Identity:

Dr Hermann Heinrich Meier was a German merchant and collector from Bremen.

Life:

Meier's father, H. H. Meier Sr (1809-1898), was a merchant and entrepreneur. He was a founder and deputy of the Norddeutsche Lloyd Bremen Bank and head of a large commercial enterprise in Bremen, H. H. Meier & Co. (a street in the Bremen suburb of Schwachhausen was named after him, H.-H.-Meier-Allee).

Well travelled and connected in Britain and the US, Meier Jr formed an outstanding 19th-century print collection, including prints by Jacques Callot, Francisco de Goya, Eugène Delacroix, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Jean-François Millet, Charles Méryon, Seymour Haden, Edouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, James Tissot, Anders Zorn, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, Max Klinger, Eduard Munch and Odilon Redon, in addition to Whistler. He appeared to prefer Whistler's early etchings and figure studies. Included in his collection were K0100z10, K0140z10, K0370z04, K0390z08, K0400z17, K0500z11, K0510z17, K0580z05, K0810117, K1100z10 and K1720119. At his death his collection passed to the Kunstverein in Bremen.
