James Alexander McCallum was a print collector.

Life:

McCallum graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1913 with a law degree, returning to obtain a PhD in 1931. McCallum's important print and drawing collection of around 4000 items was donated to the Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow in two gifts in 1939 and 1948. These gifts form a significant core of the Hunterian's present print collection. Manuscripts from his personal library are held by the university's Special Collections Department. McCallum purchased work largely from British artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. His collection of Whistler etchings comprised of largely early work from the French and Thames sets.
