Adolphe Lalauze (1838-1906) was an etcher and engraver.
Life:
Lalauze, a well known illustrator, studied at the Ecole des beaux-arts in Toulouse. His tutor, the engraver Léon Gaucherel, encouraged him to pursue a career in printmaking. He made his debut in the Salon in 1872, won a third class medal in 1876, a second class medal in 1878 and a bronze medal a the Exposition Universelle in 1889. In 1895 he was awarded the chevalier de la légion d'honneur and in 1900 a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle. His engravings after artists such as Van Dyck, Velázquez, Thomas Lawrence, Watteau and Gustave Moreau were frequently published in La Gazette des Beaux-Arts. Among the books he illustrated were editions of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote, Théophile Gautier's Jean et Jeannette (1894), Oliver Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield (1893) and Jonathan Swift's Gulliver (1875).
