John Work Garrett, 1850-1884

Identity:

John Work Garrett was President of the Baltmore and Ohio Railroad from 1858-1884.

Garrett was the second son of Elizabeth Stouffer and Robert Garrett. He married Rachel Ann Harrison (d. 1883), daughter of the Baltimore merchant Thomas Harrison. They had one daughter, Mary, and two sons Robert and Thomas Harrison Garrett.

Life:

He would have known Whistler's elder half-brother George William Whistler, who worked on the Baltimore and Ohio Railway in the 1850s, as well as the Winans family, through the firm of Winans, Harrison, and Eastwick.

His collection of some 20,000 prints was given by his sons to the Baltimore Museum of Art in the 1940s.
