Jan Boon, 1872-1975
Nationality: Dutch
Date of Birth: 2 December 1882
Place of Birth: Nieuwer-Amstel
Place of Death: Den Haag
Identity:
Jan Boon was a print maker and collector.
Life:
From 1894-1899 he studied with Philip Zilcken, who had been a friend and supporter of Whistler for thirty years. He worked with Jacob Maris, van C. Koppenol, and in the Koninklijke Akademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague. He worked in a variety of techniques, particularly etching and woodcut.
He was strongly influenced by Whistler's etchings in his own print-making. Early works like Boerenhoeve (1901) show similarities in the portrayal of light and shade, composition, and printing, to Whistler's 'French Set'. He also collected some very fine impressions of Whistler's etchings.
After his death in 1975, his collection was dispersed, although some works are still in a Dutch private collection.
