The copper plate bears the oval stamp of 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' These were Whistler's favourite suppliers of copper plates.
It is a very small plate, the same in size and stamp as several etchings including Gypsy Baby [373], Cottage Door [252], and The Japanese Dress [371]. It is also very close in size to The Fur Tippet: Miss Lenoir [365], The Menpes Children [300], Theatre, Loches [418], Children's Fruit Barrow [347], The Little Hat [366], Wimpole Street [279], The Baby, Gray's Inn [288], Windows opposite Hotel, Bourges [397], and Head of Whistler [318], which all date from slightly later.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death, and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It may have been cancelled lightly with diagonal lines, or these same marks may just be accidental scratches.
