KEYWORD

figure standing, stage.

TITLE

Whistler's original title is not known, and a descriptive title has been chosen:
A standing figure, possibly on stage (2009, Whistler Etching Project).

DESCRIPTION

The faint image of a figure with close-fitting doublet and tights standing on the right between long curtains or a wall.

SITTER

Not identified.

DISCUSSION

It is possible that this unfinished sketch relates to Whistler's interest in the theatre, as seen in such drypoints as Irving as Philip of Spain, No. 1 [158] and Irving as Philip of Spain, No. 2 [159].
It is not absolutely certain that it is by Whistler (because there is not much to see) but it is in an album of impressions from copper plates that were cancelled, rubbed out, and sold at the time of his bankruptcy. It is likely that they were all by Whistler, though printed by someone else.
