DESCRIPTION

A view across a canal, over a flat landscape with scattered houses and trees in the distance, under a cloudy sky. At far left is the steeple of a church. Two men are working, possibly holding a fishing net, on the far bank towards the right.

SITE

Ostend, Belgium, is a busy ferry and fishing port. This view is clearly not in the town, but canals run inland from the sea, from Ostend to Ghent and Bruges.
