The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' There are a number of other plates of the same size and maker including Woman sleeping in a chair 401, Market Women: Turkeys 424, Hôtel de la Promenade, Loches 415, all dating from 1888, and some later etchings including, Mallarmé 461, Marchande de Vin, Ajaccio 485 and Mrs J. Birnie Philip 479.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line from centre left to the lower right corner.
