TECHNIQUE
The plate for Château de Verneuil, Touraine, was executed in pure etching. Remnants of an earlier subject were scraped out but are visible under the landscape (see , ).
PRINTING
Two impressions of this rare etching are in black ink, printed with light tone, on ivory laid paper (, ) and two on cream Japanese paper, as thin as tissue (, ). In 1889 Whistler noted that he had one impression in stock. 12 Since he sold two impressions at a later date, he must have printed some more about that time, or simply miscounted.
