TECHNIQUE

Palaces, Brussels, is primarily an etching. Tiny patches of fine diagonals above and behind the single figure under the second window from the right, visible in the first and second states, may be drypoint or could be marks left by a scraper. Patches of drypoint were definitely added to the façades of the houses at left and centre in the second state.

PRINTING

Impressions of Palaces, Brussels were printed both in brown and in black ink on a variety of papers. Laid papers predominate, several with watermarks, such as a crown over 'GR' (, , ), hunting horn in shield (), 'PRO PATRIA' () and indecipherable (). It was also printed on thin Japanese paper (, ). By far the majority were trimmed to the platemark and signed on a tab with the butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler had printed them.
