The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to a number of plates dating from 1887 and 1888 including figure studies (i.e. The Japanese Dress 371) and townscapes (i.e. Cottage Door 252).
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was inherited by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). At least one impression was printed by Frederick Goulding (1842-1909) on 26 January 1904 (). After Goulding printed it in 1904 the plate was cancelled with a diagonal line across the lower right corner. Miss Philip gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
