The copper plate has no maker's mark, but was probably made by Hughes & Kimber. It is quite close in size to other plates dating from 1887, including Return to Tilbury 311, Windsor Castle 314, Doorway, Sandwich 323 and Doorway, Gray's Inn 289.
The plate remained in Whistler's estate at his death, and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled by a diagonal line from the centre of the left side to near the lower right corner, on the right edge.
