State 1

Signed with a butterfly at lower left.
The composition is complete.
The impression reproduced has small dashes of ink at upper right, probably produced during the wiping process.

State 2

With fine horizontal drypoint shading above the horizon to the right of the large sailing ship in the background; there are a few new horizontal lines below that ship.

State 3

The fine horizontal and curving lines among the waves at the centre of the plate are mostly removed or worn away.

State 4

Etching: K3250203
Small clouds are added lightly in drypoint; light horizontal drypoint shading is added above the horizon at centre and right.

State 4 (cancelled)
