TECHNIQUE
The plate for Church Doorway, Edgware was executed in pure etching (drawn on the spot and etched back in the studio). It was drawn quickly, with long, slightly uneven, broken outlines, dots, dashes and patches of close zig-zag shading. It is a vignette, focussing on the door and only part of the window above.
PRINTING
It is very rare: only three impressions have been located. They are printed in black ink with very light tone on laid paper of different hues, cream (), ivory () and buff (). They were trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp' to show that Whistler had printed them.
