The Hoop (Gray's Inn) was never published but is related to the 'Grey's Inn Set'.

EXHIBITIONS

No exhibition of The Hoop (Gray's Inn) is recorded during Whistler's lifetime. After Whistler's death an impression was lent to the comprehensive exhibition at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904. 12 No other exhibitions are known.

SALES & COLLECTORS

On 21 December 1887 Whistler sold an impression of 'The Hoop (Gray’s Inn)' to the London print dealer, Thomas M. McLean (b. ca 1832) for £8.8.0. 13

A few years later, in 1895, an impression was sold by the artist under the title 'Under trees - Gray's Inn', to H. Wunderlich & Co. for £6.6.0 (£5.0.0. after discount). 14 This, the only known impression of this etching, was bought from Wunderlich's by Albert Henry Wiggin (1868-1951) in 1919 for Boston Public Library ().
