Doorway, Gray's Inn dates from 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date.
The leaves on the trees and the dresses worn by the women and children suggest that it was etched in the warm weather of summer, possibly between April and September 1887. It was first listed for sale some time after October 1887. 1 An impression of the second state may have been printed later, and was signed in the 1890s ().
