The copper plate has no maker's mark. It was similar in size to a number of plates including Price's Candle Factory 166, Lindsey Houses 161, Rag Shop, Milman's Row, Chelsea 329 and Merton Villa, Chelsea 381. It may have been cancelled very lightly with crossed diagonal lines.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
