STATE
One state is known.
State 1
Signed with an indistinct butterfly at lower right, to left of the four figures at right.
State 1 (lightly damaged plate)
The plate surface is lightly scratched and pitted, resulting in scattered dots and dashes across the image; fine vertical scratches are apparent on some impressions.
Some impressions with minor plate damage were presumably printed by others after Whistler's death (i.e. , and ).
State 1 (damaged plate)
The plate is further damaged by rust, acid or another corrosive action, resulting in large, irregular blotches at the bottom and right, as well as a number of smaller patches at left.
Some of these recent, posthumous impressions have less prominent evidence of corrosion due to lighter inking and more careful wiping of the plate (i.e. ).
