The Tow-Path probably dates from 1887. It appears to be late spring or summer, with trees in full leaf. Whistler recorded printing several impressions in August 1887. 1

The copper plate is unusually small, and is close in size to several plates including two landscapes, Dieppe 251 and Little Chelsea (Memorial) 315, which are dated 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date, and 'The Tow-Path' was first listed by Whistler either late in 1887 or early 1888. 2
