It dates from after the death of Cecil Lawson on 10 June 1882 (a portrait of Lawson is reproduced below) and is based on a painting by Lawson. It was published in Edmund William Gosse (1849-1928), Cecil Lawson: A Memoir in 1883; the foreword is dated October 1882.
