STATE

Four states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Etching: K2220102
There is no signature or inscription.
The composition is complete; a few small pits and scratches are visible.

State 2

Etching: K2220101
Prominent spots of corrosion appear at top, centre and lower left; there is a long diagonal scratch from the horizon line to the gondola.

State 3

Etching: K2220z01
The spots of corrosion are mostly removed; new slight diagonal lines are added to the water at left, below the taller campanile and sailboat; a series of right to left diagonal lines (///) covers worn lines on the prow of the gondola; several diagonal scratches appear on the water and sky, between the top of the gondola and the right edge of the image.

State 4

Etching: K2220202
New shading darkens and further defines the two sails on the horizon; the curved lines of the gondola prow are reinforced or redrawn; new lines darken the post to the right of the prow.

State 4 (cancelled)

Etching: PS_K222_01
Cancelled posthumously with one diagonal line.

No impression from the cancelled plate is known. This is a digital image based on the copper plate. 5

5: A scan of the copper plate was flipped horizontally, converted to greyscale, and colour inverted, with enhanced contrast.
