TECHNIQUE

This was drawn entirely in drypoint. One impression of the first state (reproduced below) is worked over extensively in wash, presumably to indicate possible additions to the copper plate (). However, the changes indicated by the wash drawing were not made.
Etching: K2210102

PRINTING

It is rare: only four impressions have been located. One of the first proofs, mentioned above, was printed in black ink and worked on with wash, and is on a strong, fibrous, vellum-like wove paper (). Another early impression, printed in dark brown ink with heavy ink tone, is on cream 'modern' (post-1800) laid paper watermarked 'CHALLET' (). An impression of the last state, printed much more lightly, but still with tone on the water, is on ivory laid paper ().
