The copper plate has the oval stamp of 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' on the verso.
Similar in size, and with the same manufacturer's stamp, are several other large plates, brought with Whistler from London and intended for the set of Venice etchings commissioned by the Fine Art Society. Of these, The Doorway 193, The Riva 229 and The Two Doorways 221, were indeed published in 1880. 9

9: Getscher 1970[more].

The others - Nocturne: Palaces 200, The Bridge, Santa Marta 201, The Rialto 199 and The Balcony - were included in the second set published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Alphonse Wyatt Thibaudeau (ca 1840- d.1892) in 1886. This plate was cancelled with crossed diagonal lines.
The plates for the 'Second Venice Set' are now in the Art Institute of Chicago. 10
