Whistler arrived in Venice in September 1879 and left fourteen months later. This etching was started in 1879. One impression is signed and dated '1st state - 1st proof - Venice 1879' ().
Nocturne was published by the Fine Art Society in Venice, a Series of Twelve Etchings (the 'First Venice Set') in 1880, and printed at intervals until 1889.
