STATE

Four states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Etching: K1650101
Signed with a butterfly at lower right.
The composition is complete.

State 2

Etching: K1650103
Horizontal lines are added in the sky above the horizon, and diagonal lines above them; in the middle distance at left, a small boat sailing towards the viewer has been removed, and the sail of the ship behind it, sailing to right, has been altered and heavily shaded; to right again, in the distance, a tall-masted sailing ship has been largely removed.

State 3

Etching: K1650203
The tall-masted sailing ship in the distance has been redrawn; the sides of three of the rowboats at left are partly shaded by short diagonal lines; the trousers of the second man from left in the nearest boat are shaded; diagonal lines are added in the sky over the shed at far right.

State 4

Etching: K1650402
More diagonal shading is added in the sky; the two rowing boats are more thoroughly shaded; shading on the rowing- and sailing boat in the centre is completed; the boats' reflections are extended

State 4 (cancelled)

Etching: K1650503
Cancelled with long slightly curving diagonal lines.
