The composition is mostly complete.

State 2

Horizontal lines are added in the sky behind the shipping.

State 3

Signed with a butterfly at lower left.
Dark shading is added on the warehouses, particularly those in the distance; diagonal shading is added on the nearest warehouse at lower right; shading is added on the hulls of the ships in the river at left; there is some foul biting on the water; more ships are added in the distance by the wharf to left of centre.

State 4

Etching: K1630502
The barge and small boats near it at left centre have been mainly burnished out; the horizontal shading behind the ships has either faded or been removed.
Published in this state by the Fine Art Society, London, in 1879.

Horizontal drypoint shading is added above the ships; clouds are added above the big warehouses at right.

State 6

More drypoint clouds and shading are added in the sky at upper left; the drypoint at upper right is fading or has been rubbed down.

Horizontal drypoint lines are added in the sky, extending the earlier horizontal lines; shading is extended on the hulls of a boat in the river at left and on the ships in the river and by the wharf to left of centre.
