Wych Street, London dates from 1877. One impression was signed and dated '1877' (). The first and second proofs of the first state were annotated by Whistler and signed with a butterfly dating from 1877 (, ). They were sold to Charles Augustus Howell (1840?-1890) on 15 November 1877. 1

In 1878 H. Stewart Cundell in an article on 'English Etchings' commented:

1: Whistler to Howell, 14-16 November [1877], GUW #13668.

'Mr Whistler, we are glad to learn, is resuming his etching, and among his most recent plates we may mention ... etchings of Temple Bar and Wych-street, which, when completed, will rank with his most masterly plates.' 2
