STATE

Four states are known.

State 1

Etching: K1490101
Signed with a butterfly at upper right.
There is one long boat in the foreground; there is no moon; the funnel of the steamer at left is white.

State 2

Etching: K1490203
The boat in the foreground is divided into two smaller boats by a single stroke; two curved lines are added in the bow of the boat at left; a small white area has been burnished out above the wharf and warehouses at right (it is smoke, but Kennedy thought it was the moon). 10

10: Kennedy 1910[more] (cat. no. 149).

State 3

Etching: K1490305
Several diagonal lines are added to the shading between the two large steamers; the funnels of the steamers are shaded with horizontal lines; there is more vertical shading on the warehouses at right and horizontal shading extends the ships' reflections.

State 4

Etching: K1490303
Horizontal shading reinforces the ships' reflections.
