The copper plate is close in size to two other Liverpool plates, Portrait sketches including F.R. Leyland and Whistler 122 and F. R. Leyland 121, as well as to a figure study, Nude Posing 125.
It was given by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) to the University of Glasgow in 1935 (GLAHA 50268). It is not known if Miss Philip inherited it from Whistler or if it was sold at the time of his bankruptcy and later retrieved by her from the Fine Art Society or from Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851).
