Agnes dates from between 1875 and 1878. It may date from the same time as The Scotch Widow 147 and The Boy (Charlie Hanson) 145. At that date the sitter, Bridget Agnes Hiffernan (1844/1845-after 1919), and her sister, Joanna Hiffernan (b. ca 1843), appear to have been in close touch with Whistler and concerned in the upbringing of Charles James Whistler Hanson (1870-1935), who is The Boy.
