STATE

Five states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Etching: K1330102
There is no signature or inscription.

State 2

Etching: K1330201
The expression of the face is slightly changed, possibly rubbed down, with some short lines of shading added, so that she looks less cross; diagonal lines in the background at right extend down to below her hand; shading above her hair at upper left is lengthened; a diagonal line is added in the upper left corner.

State 3

Etching: K1330302
New shading is added on the face and hair; the figure, particularly the arms, are more defined with outlines and shading; horizontal shading is added to left of her chin and shoulder and three series of short vertical lines extend the shading to right of her head; horizontal lines are added above the desk, which is more clearly defined; the diagonal line in the upper left corner is removed.

State 4

Etching: K1330301
New darker shading is added on her hair; several short vertical lines extend the shading to right of her head.

State 5

Etching: K1330402
The head appears to be more oval, and more evenly shaded; vertical lines shade the space to right of her neck; the neck of the dress is redrawn and there is new light shading on the bodice and heavy shading on the skirt; the knees, front and hem of the skirt are drawn with heavy lines; vertical lines are added above her knees and diagonal shading to right, on the sloping desk; the diagonal shading is also extended at lower right.
In the impression reproduced, there is grey wash shading on the head, enlarging it.

State 5 (cancelled)

Etching: K1330501
Cancelled with diagonal lines.
