The Beach, Hastings dates from 1875/1877.
On one impression Whistler wrote the date, '1873.' Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) added 'His mother there at the time.' (). However, the date of 1873 is unlikely - it was 1875 before Anna Matilda Whistler (1804-1881) retired to Hastings where she lived until her death in 1881.

The Beach, Hastings was first recorded as sold, to Charles Augustus Howell (1840?-1890), in 1877. 1

1: Howell to Whistler, [6-15 November 1877], GUW #02178.
