STATE
Six states are known before damage to the plate, and its restoration and cancellation.
State 1
Inscribed 'Fanny Leyland' at upper left, with the 'F' reversed.
The composition is complete.
There is no background; one foot, wearing a slipper, appears just beneath the skirt; at lower left there are faint outlines of that foot differently drawn, and to right, the other foot.
On one impression, probably the first proof () there are two diagonal marks, probably scratches, at the bottom edge, but these do not constitute an extra state since they were immediately removed, leaving only the faintest trace.
State 2
Signed with a butterfly near the left edge, above centre.
Vertical lines are added behind the chair and the front chair legs, and to left of the butterfly.
State 3
More vertical lines are added under the seat of the chair; the skirt is extended at right, covering the chair leg, and is lengthened by several lines, one of which crosses the foot at left.
State 4
The top of the head is more strongly outlined and the wavy hair is drawn in more detail; the lines behind the figure are extended down to the leg of the chair, and there are more lines under it, two of them forming an inverted V; the foot just beneath the skirt has been partly erased; diagonal lines suggesting frills are added on the hem of the skirt, which is slightly lengthened at lower left.
State 5
Patches of diagonal lines enhance the shading on the frills of the skirt; longer slanting lines are added on the back of the skirt.
State 6
Short diagonal lines are added on the bodice; the front of the dress and the hair are retouched; the shading on the frills is reinforced and extended; strong slanting lines are added on the lower part of the skirt and augment the shading under the chair; short cross-lines are added on the edge of the cushion; shading on the skirt above the cushion crosses the struts of the chair.
State 6 (damaged)
There are conspicuous scratches above and behind the figure's head, above her knee, on her skirt, and at lower left below the faint foot.
State 6 (restored)
Most of the scratches have been removed; the drypoint is worn.
State 6 (cancelled)
It was cancelled with a diagonal line across the bottom.
No impression from the cancelled plate is known. This is a digital image based on the copper plate. 10
