Two states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Signed and dated 'Whistler - / 1867 -' at lower right.
The composition is practically complete.
Before the horizontal and oblique lines between the mast and the stays to right of it.

State 2

Etching: K0940201
Four short drypoint lines are added on the back of the man standing in the left foreground; shading is added on the jacket of the man facing forward; diagonal and horizontal drypoint lines are added in the sky, to right of the mast; horizontal lines cross the distant shipping; the distant hulls and rigging at right are elaborated.

State 2 (cancelled)

Cancelled with broad diagonal lines across the entire plate, from left to right and vice versa.
