STATE

Two states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Etching: K0630101
Signed 'Whistler.' and dated '1860.' diagonally across the lower left corner.
The forehead and face are shaded by strong lines; there is a clear angular space to left of the chair-frame, below the roll of the cape over the right wrist.

State 2

Etching: K0630202
There is additional shading on the face, hair and whiskers; vertical shading is extended below the edge of the cape, where it is folded back from his wrist; fine vertical lines are added at the right, on the panelling seen over the balustrade; a white spot to right of the figure, at the edge of the panelling, is partly shaded by thin vertical lines; four longer irregular vertical lines are added to right of this.

State 2 (cancelled)

Etching: K0630302
Cancelled with crossed diagonal and zigzag lines, particularly over the face. There are childish sketches on the plate (not by Whistler), including a head and shoulders upside down, at the bottom of the plate, eyes at upper right, and butterflies at upper right and at the bottom.
