STATE

Four states are known.

State 1

Etching: K0620102
Signed 'Whistler.' and dated '1860.' with '6' reversed, at lower left.
Near the bottom is the faint outline of a girl's head, upside down; Annie's cape and skirt are indicated roughly.

State 2

Etching: K0620201
Annie's right leg is roughly outlined.

State 3

Etching: K0620z01
Most additions are in drypoint: the figure and curtain are completed, with the cape folded back at left, a broad ribbon tied at her waist, with the ends hanging down; she wears dark stockings and slippers with rosettes, and stands on a patterned carpet; the bottom of the curtain is seen just under the hem of her skirt; there is a small nearly horizontal mark just above and to left of the hat.
The marks of acid droplets are visible at both lower corners: the carpet may have been etched.

State 4

Etching: K0620313
The marks of acid at the lower corners are removed; the carpet may have been reinforced with drypoint. In late impressions the drypoint is much worn, as in the impression reproduced below.
