There is no signature or inscription.

State 2

Signed and dated 'Whistler. / 1859.' at lower left.
The locks of hair falling over her shoulders, the sleeve folds to left of her bodice, and the area around the eyelid at upper right have been rubbed or worn down; the man's head at lower right has been partly scraped out.
No impression of this state has been located; it is only known from impressions of the cancelled plate.
