Three states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Etching: K0530101
Signed and inscribed 'Whistler - 1859.' at lower left.
The composition is complete. Faint lettering reading 'Lamont' (thrice) and small faint figures, not by Whistler, are visible near the lower edge.

State 2

Etching: K0530204
Drypoint lines reinforce and extend the shadows in the background on both sides of the head, and on his jacket over the shoulder at right; the figures and writing at the bottom are partly covered with burnishing.

State 3

Etching: K0530202
The figures and writing at the bottom have been removed, though in some impressions the burnishing is still apparent (i.e. ).
