J. Becquet, sculptor probably dates from 1859. Whistler was in Paris in 1859 and etched several similar portraits including C. L. Drouet, Sculptor 035 and Z. Astruc, Editor of 'L'Artiste' 036, which are both dated '1859' on the plate.
The first recorded sale was by Francis Seymour Haden, Sr (1818-1910) to South Kensington Museum on 1 January 1861 (). 1

It was published as 'The Fiddler' in 1871 as part of A Series of Sixteen Etchings of Scenes on The Thames and other Subjects (the 'Thames Set').
