La Marchande de Moutarde is based on two drawings done in Cologne during Whistler's etching tour of the Rhineland between 14 August and 7 October 1858, La Marchande de Poterie à Cologne m0272 (reproduced below), and La Marchande de Moutarde m0273.
Etching: c_K022_01
It is not known if he etched the copper plate in Cologne. It is more likely that the etching process was carried out on Whistler's return to Paris. 1

The etching was published in Douze eaux-fortes d'après Nature (the 'French Set') in Paris in November 1858. It was republished in London in 1888.
